Safety, Boxed Warnings and Contraindications Covered
GLP-1 medications carry real risks. The course covers them in educational terms, using the FDA-approved labeling as the reference:
- Boxed warning (risk of thyroid C-cell tumors) on the labeling of the weekly semaglutide and tirzepatide products for weight management, and the related contraindication for patients with a personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma or Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia syndrome type 2
- Common side effects, such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and constipation, and how to manage them
- Serious risks covered in the labeling, such as pancreatitis, gallbladder disease, kidney injury from dehydration, and hypoglycemia with certain other medications [CONFIRM against current labels]
- Screening: pregnancy and breastfeeding, history of pancreatitis, diabetic retinopathy, other medications, and eating-disorder history
- Informed consent, monitoring and documentation
The Regulatory Landscape for GLP-1 Medications
Rules around these drugs have changed recently, so the course keeps you current on what matters to a practice:
- FDA declared the tirzepatide shortage resolved in October 2024 and the semaglutide shortage resolved in February 2025. Neither is currently on the shortage list, which limits when compounded versions may be used.
- In April 2026 FDA proposed excluding semaglutide and tirzepatide from the list that outsourcing facilities rely on for bulk compounding. The comment period closed on June 29, 2026. [CONFIRM: status of the final decision as of publish date. NOT VERIFIED beyond the sources below.]
- Pharmacy compounding of products that are essentially copies of approved drugs is restricted, with limited exceptions for documented individual medical necessity.
