Advice for Physician Assistants who want to start a Medspa and get Botox injection training course.
We often get Physician Assistants who graduate from PA school and want to get into aesthetics and take a Botox certification training course for Physician Assistants with us. BEFORE you sign up for your training with us, we recommend the following key steps.
State laws
Physician Assistants may NOT open up a medical spa without a physician. The title PA ties your degree to a physician. But state regulations get even more confusing. For example, Florida has strict laws about which TYPE of board-certified physicians can supervise a PA to perform cosmetic procedures and how many they can open. State laws differ and it is important that you understand the type of relationship (supervisory, or independent) that is required from your medical director. We recommend that you call your state licensing board to get the latest up to date information on your state’s regulation. PLEASE CALL YOUR STATE LICENSING BOARD BEFORE YOUR TRAINING.
Finding a job
My physician friends who are putting out job postings for PA’s in the aesthetic field are looking for one thing: EXPERIENCE. So are most recruiters in this field.
How does a brand new PA find a job if you don’t have experience? I’ve seen brand new PAs get a job through connections during their training rotation when they were fortunate to find a physician that they connected with. Otherwise, it is really difficult to find an established practice with a client list who wants to hire a new PA to train. It is a recipe for disaster for that practice.
Also, getting training without a job leaves you in limbo for many months after your training. We know that this is a crucial time to keep practicing your injections to fine-tune your new skill. Therefore, what I am trying to say is that you should have a job BEFORE you get your Botox certification training.
So, we recommend the following:
If you are not fortunate enough to have a physician connection, then contact a local physician who is injecting Botox in your area (does not have to be dermatologist or plastic surgeon). Ask the physician if you can shadow her/him during the Botox injection days. If you ask ten physicians, then I guarantee that at least one of them will say “yes.” During the months of shadowing, ask if you can inject as well after you’ve received your official training. Most of the time, you and your physician have developed a rapport and you’ll get the green light. Also, you can contact a physician in your area about getting trained together. It may seem intrusive, but if you contact at least 10 physicians then you will likely find at least one that will say “yes”.
The flip side is to be persistent in applying to as many positions as possible. Hopefully, you live in a large metro area like Los Angeles or Chicago where there are more job openings. Just be aware that while getting your foot in the door is important, that there are many practices who operate unethically or against state laws.

1 Hour Botox® Review & Dermal Filler Review with a live model.
Hours of Hands On Training afterwards.
Your end time depends on the number of models and your discussion with your trainer (typically 4 – 5 hours total).
Please note:
- The areas that you will inject will vary depending on the models that are available on your training day. If you have a specific area that you want to target, then we recommend that you assist us in finding patients who will request to have the practice area injected on your training day.
- Dysport®, Xeomin®, Jeaveau®, Restylane®, Juvederm® or Belotero® injections may also be taught at your training depending on your product purchase.
- We ask that you reach out to your office staff, friends and family to volunteer to become injection models. Our experience has been that you will have NO problem finding volunteers if you or your staff will announce on Social Media (Facebook, Twitter, etc) that you need injection models. Most of our trainees will ask the models to pay for the cost of Botox® and Dermal Fillers used on that training day.
- The cost of Botox® and filler is NOT included in the training price. We typically recommend that you buy at least 2 vials of Botox® and 4 filler syringes. Call us to find out how to get FREE products or supplies for your training.
- Your non-medical office staff should be a part of the training experience for them to gain valuable sales knowledge.
