Botox Tested to Help Treat Depression

Depression can be caused by many reasons; life events or personal factors may be the cause of it. There are also many ways to treat depression; going to the doctor for treatment, exercise, and light therapy. However, researchers also found that Botox can help in treating depression.

Botox is a drug made from a Neurotoxin produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum or known as the Botolinum Toxin. It is used medically for treating people with certain muscular conditions as well as for cosmetic treatments. This drug paralyzes the muscles for a moment, so that it can remove wrinkles on the face. The Botolinum toxin is injected to the facial muscle so that it interrupts the cycle for the facial muscle sending signals to the brain. This Botox treatment is usually done in the area above the nose and in between the brows (frown lines).

There are some researches done to prove this theory. Tillmann Kroger and M. Axel Wollmer, MD from the Asklepios Clinic North Ochsenzoll in Hamburg, Germany did research on the botox treatment as another treatment for depression. They had 30 patients with high levels of treatment resistant depression, which were made as the study case. The patients were randomly selected to either have a single injection of Botox or a single injection of saline placebo (fake treatment). After six weeks of the single treatment, people who were categorized in the Botox group had the percentage of 41.7 reduced of their depression symptom, and only 9.2% was reduced from the placebo group. This showed a big difference in the effect of the Botox injection treatment.

In the latest, published in the current issue of the Journal of Psychiatric Research. Finzi and Rosenthal showed that 17 of 33 patients experienced better than 50 percent reductions in their depression symptoms after a single Botox injection, and 27 percent of the group saw their depression go into remission.

Researches are also testing whether the Botox injection can help as a remedy for other psychiatric disorders. So, even if there are some side effects for Botox injection like paralysis in muscles if injected in the wrong muscle, it can help in dealing with lifting a person’s mood as well as help in reducing and removing depression. In order to stray away from some of the side effects of Botox injection, it is advisable to ask a doctor for advice before doing this treatment.

The procedure takes around a quarter of an hour when booked with a practitioner with Botox training, with the patient sitting in a chair or on the couch, and is conducted without need for an anaesthetic as it is no more painful than acupuncture. It can take a few days before the results are noticeable, but it will be between four and six months before the patient needs another course of injections.
